This is a 1960 John Deere model 840 (tractor) with a John Deere #400 elevating scraper (usually called a "pan"). This is the largest example of a John Deere two cylinder tractor, with a diesel engine and the whole rig with pan weighs over 20,000 pounds.

This beautiful example is owned by John Craig, a great guy and smart too. The tractor and pan have been rebuilt from the bottom up. If you look, every single nut and bolt appears to be brand new. Even the massive fenders were made!

While it is made by JD, this is a piece of construction equipment...not for use on the farm, but to prepare ground for roads or to build ponds, etc.

The tractor pulls the scraper...which digs into the ground....the paddles pick up the dirt (breaking it up) and dump the soil into the pan. The pan can be opened to redistribute the soil into low spots. So it digs out high spots and fills in lows...it levels the soil.

Here is one in action: [link]

I almost bought one of these a few months ago. I still want one, though I don't know what to do with it.

That thing is just humongous... and intimidating. Even if its bright yellow :XD: What does one do with it? I can see that it must be some kind of farming equipment, that somehow is able to scrape something up and transport it upwards towards its back, but I don't know exactly ^^
